I was whipping up school lunches when I overheard I was whipping up school lunches when I overheard @craigmelvinnbc share on live tv that the Holy Spirit just moved him to ask the new NY Archbishop to pray.

So often in Christian circles we tend to think our faith operates in a tight circle to the exclusion of the outside world. When this happens, we can falsely assume the average person has little if any framework for the God presented to us in Scripture.

However, in times of crisis, we see that there are people across sectors who do in fact turn to God.

I am encouraged by Craig’s tenderness to the Holy Spirit and prayerfully ask alongside this circle of friends to @savannahguthrie that there would be peace, comfort, and clarity.

Savannah, I’m sad with you.

Walk, don’t run. You don’t have to sprint in this Walk, don’t run. You don’t have to sprint in this marathon.

I see you. You grew up in Church and left unsure I see you.

You grew up in Church and left unsure about it all.

You were hurt by your local church and stepped outside for fresh air.

You know the basic stories but don’t really get the point.

But then…

You just couldn’t get over Jesus.

His perfect deity in human form.
God with us.
The way he lived.
How he loved.
How he turned the expected norms upside down.
The way he redefined power as selfless service.
How he was just getting started and is still coming back to finish fixing it all.

And you just had to get back to Jesus.

If there is looming curiousity you just can’t shake, let that be your sign to come home.

Or maybe just grab coffee with someone you think might know a little more than you about it all.

Don’t be shy.

You can step toward Jesus again even if you pressed pause for a hot minute.

I wish younger me didn’t expend so much mental ene I wish younger me didn’t expend so much mental energy on pining after the validation of others as it relates to my calling.

Do I regret championing women in leadership?
Absolutely not.

Do I wish I’d not advocated so loudly for female preachers and pastors?
Heck no.

But the wiser I become, the more I recognize the freedom of truly advocating for these realities apart from receiving personal approval.

You see, there comes a point where you either choose to expend your mental energy arguing with the naysayers or you choose to step out from under their influence and into what you’ve been called to do.

Staying might feel like advocacy and it could be…but it could also be that you are just holding onto hope that the people you have loved will accept you for who you are.

And that holding on waiting for approval and hoping for acceptance, might just be the very thing keeping you stuck. It’s a distraction, a discouragement, a trap.

Sister. Step out, step up, go, and do.

You don’t need them to permit your calling, you just need to heed it.

You want ________ . And it’s all fine and good tha You want ________ .
And it’s all fine and good that you do.

But in this season of perpetual shopping and splurging and list making, you’re getting sucked into chasing after that never-ending list of wants.

Don’t forget to pause and remember the warm feelings you felt when you received those wants you already have.

You know that feeling of flipping back through you You know that feeling of flipping back through your prayer journal and seeing those tear-stained pages, don’t you?! Does it ever feel like you’re revisiting an old pit of despair?

If you’re like me, you have walked on the mountain top and through the valley low. My journal has become my sacred space where I dump out all my worries, fears, frustrations, and cares to God.

I like to write my prayers because it keeps my focus in the way offering silent utterances never could. I just feverishly scratch out messy, smudged black ink in old cursive for no one but God’s eyes to read.
So if you find one of mine, return or burn it please.

Do you keep a prayer journal? Give it a go.

Subjects like female empowerment, social justice, Subjects like female empowerment, social justice, and trauma-informed care translate to causes that pique my interest.

Needless to say, when a colleague introduced me to Robin Gauthier the ED of @samaritanhouseva I jumped at the opportunity.

Earlier this week, Robin gave me a behind-the-scenes tour of the incredible work Samaritan House is doing to help people free themselves from homelessness, sexual + domestic violence, and human trafficking right here in VA Beach and the Hampton Roads region.

I had the incredible opportunity of visiting their newest property, The Hallows, which provides a safe haven for minor victims. I was blown away with the incredible work this organisation is doing right here in my hometown.

They have an immediate need for winter coats (now, while it is cold outside!) but you can find a complete list of needed items on their website.

Please read my latest blog post for more details on my visit and suggestions for how you can get involved.

The first call was to step into drama ministry. It The first call was to step into drama ministry. It required me to tour the Midwest for a full summer during my teen years. I gained perspective, grew in my faith, and met my future husband.

The second call was to move to Indiana and teach in a children’s ministry. Those kids and their families marked my heart for a lifetime…I still miss them.

The third call was a leap of faith with a hop, skip, and a jump back into college and unto grad school in Texas. I sharpened my professional skills, gained some depth, and healed from religious trauma in a solid Christian community.

The fourth call required a cross-country move to Pennsylvania with two young kids. I co-coordinated a mom’s ministry, led a home group, began public speaking in group settings, and oversaw development for a small nonprofit.

The fifth call brought me to Virginia where I’m settling into serving in VA Beach by preaching periodically in churches and investing in local nonprofits.

Every single call has involved risk but carried with it exciting opportunities. When I think back over these last twenty years of ministry, I am thankful I’ve gotten the chance to say yes.
